Q - Please state the following information concerning the 'Serengeti Cyclone Parasol- ultra strong: 1- what is the diameter in mm of the stainless steel central pole? 2- can the parasol be kept open all year around in a central London location except of course in exceptionally bad weather? In this case how long do you expect it to survive? 3- in the case of a mobile base with concrete slabs for the parasol, do you expect the parasol to need less slabs, i.e two for example if the central pole is going through the central hole of a very large round table 2m in diameter weighing at least 75 kg by itself? Thank you

A - Thankyou for your enquiry.

  1. Attached is the Serengeti Cyclone specification sheet. The diameter of the centre pole is 60mm. I have now added this to the website, along with the base weight:

  3. Yes, the Serengeti Cyclone is designed for all year outdoor use but will need to be "wind managed" like all parasols. Central London varies locally on just how gusty the wind is - some dockland properties or high properties, for example, are extremely windy and so you need to make your own assessment of when the parasol needs to be closed according to your local conditions. Saying that, obviously, the stronger the parasol frame, the more wind the parasol will withstand, and this is exactly why the Cyclone was developed. The frame of the parasol should last years and years. The canopy of a parasol is usually the first element to show wear as it is made of textile. I would estimate approximately 5 years of wear if it is outside all the time but it does depend on quite how wet the winters are and if the parasol is closed when the canopy can no longer cope with the wind. You are very likely to need to clean the canopy during this the 5 year period.
  4. In principle, yes, you are of course right: the table frame adds extra support to the parasol pole and so less reliance is placed on the weight in the base. However, personally, I can see to be gained in reducing the number of slabs in the frame. You will want a balanced weight on the base and the base frame will not reduce in size by having fewer slabs. Finally, the base price includes all 4 slabs. But reading between the lines you may already have a base which you would like to use as an alternative. The Cyclone base weighs approx 130kg. The parasol's wind resistance has been assessed and tested based on this base weight. I cannot hand on heart advise you by how much you are able to reduce the base weight because of the 75kg supporting table. Some yes, but there is not a direct correllation between supporting weight and base weight, as I am sure you appreciate. As with the strength of the parasol frame, the more weight, the better the wind resistance.

Let me know if you need any more information. We have Serengeti Cyclone in stock if you would like to place an order.
