Shade Q&A
Thoughts on patio and poolside living. A blog by Claire - The Patio Umbrella
Can you help me choose a cantilever parasol for my back garden?

Question:
Attached are some pics of the garden and where we are looking to put the umbrella. The white rendered wall space beside the patio door is the centre of the patio area and we want the umbrella to stand against that wall and be able to rotate to shade the table and chairs as required and also rotate the other way to shade the outdoor sofa as required. The width of the patio is 6 metres, so a 2.7 diameter umbrella should work perfectly. The depth of the patio area is 3.6 metres.
The height of the rendered wall is 2.4 and the doors are 2 metres tall. I need the door to be able to open up under the umbrella, so the 2.6 pole looks to be my option rather than the adjustable one. But I need to confirm how low the actual fabric umbrella canopy will come down from the pole if you get what I mean - so that I know the door will open underneath the canopy.
Let me know what you'd suggest for the stand options, there is a drain along the back wall that we don't want to cover up too much. Maybe you could look this over and I could call you tomorrow to discuss?
Answer: I don't think we spoke in the end, and perhaps you were waiting for my response. Sorry if that was the case! I think that the paraflex 2.7m (which comes in a white) looks like a good idea, with a king size arm. You can either wall mount it or have in on a side post. You could set the wall mount section and or arm on the pole quite high so it clears the doors - but you are right, it will be better to talk this truth. I will wait to hear from you if you would like to take it further. I do not have all the measurements from vertically from top to bottom of the parasol when open, but I know that the 1.9m square is 50cms, so the other parasols are going to be in this region. I will call you tomorrow.
